When you’ve pledged to commit wholeheartedly to a strict diet and exercise regime, there’s nothing worse than caving in during dark evenings or the weekends when reaching out for those sugary treats.

The following tips will help you fight food cravings and bring your desired physique closer to reality.

Brush up

Next time you’re feeling weak and the urge to stray from your healthy eating, nip to the bathroom and brush your teeth. Brushing your teeth prior to eating will convince your mind that you have eaten therefore reducing cravings to eat.

Slow down

Rushing meals can actually lead to overeating since the stomach doesn’t have the necessary time to inform the brain that it’s full. Chewing food slowly and deliberately makes it more likely you’ll eat a moderate portion and reduce snacking afterwards.

Cardio is key

It’s no longer a secret, high intensity cardio (alongside weights) is the most efficient way to burn body fat. Not only can this be done alone but also with friends during classes. Intense cardio helps to control Ghrelin, the hormone which causes those junk food cravings.

Rest is best

Sleep is vital to fighting food cravings and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Research has found that being sleep deprived motivates us to snack throughout the day. Try to aim for at least 7 hours sleep per night to keep those cravings out of mind.

Keep Busy

Boredom is one of the most common triggers for eating unhealthily. Try and avoid falling into trap by keeping your days structured and staying busy.

Humans have been programmed to increase their food consumption during heightened period of stress. Unfortunately, the foods that we tend to reach out for during these periods are salty or sugary. Tips to overcoming stress are exercise, deep breathing, reading and visualisation, but use whatever tools you have to keep on at a relaxed state of mind.
